Sunday is the big day. The day I wait for all year. The Oscars! So I figured I would lay out some of my predictions. The movies and actors I think will win and who I think should win. Two VERY different things. I understand that the awards are a few days away, but frankly I'm going to be drunk all day on saturday, so why not get this going. This year is much different than usual, mainly because there will be 10 best picture nominations versus the 5 there usually is. I think this is a good thing because more movies have a chance to be honored, yet a bad thing because honestly some of the movies just don't deserve it. It in a way makes the other nominees not as special or honored. So here's my take on some of the nominations. If you are in my Oscar pool, stop reading immediately because you'll probably just steal my predictions and end up winning the cash prize because something like that would happen to me...
BEST PICTUREAvatar
The Blindside
An Education
The Hurt Locker: Will Win
Up
Inglorious Basterds
Precious
District 9
A Serious Man
Up in the Air: Should Win
This is a very tough category this year. What is the deal with The Hurt Locker? Critics loved it, which honestly I don't understand. I just thought it didn't really have a story. Up in the Air was a front runner for awhile, but kind of dwindled recently. The subject matter is very relevant and shows a really different view on the corporate world. I loved it. Avatar not only broke every record possible, but it was the most advanced movie ever made. Critics problem with it is that it may be technologically advanced, but its story lacks. The Blindside as a nomination is completely ridiculous. Yeah it was a tearjerker that people enjoyed, but far from the best picture of the year. Precious was overrated to me. I think the subject matter is just something that is different and supposed to shock people. I could care less. I loved Inglorious Basterds and District 9. They are both original and great in their own way. I think both are much better than The Hurt Locker, but I guess thats why I'm not an actual critic.
BEST DIRECTORKathryn Bigelow "The Hurt Locker": Will Win
James Cameron "Avatar": Should Win
Lee Daniels "Precious"
Jason Reitman "Up in the Air"
Quentin Tarantino "Inglorious Basterds"
An interesting category too. The front runners Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron used to be married. So much sexual tension in the Kodak theatre. Again Kathryn will win which I think is outrageous considering the years, time, and amazing advances it took to make Avatar. But who knows, maybe James Cameron will be King of the World yet again!
BEST ACTORJeff Bridges "Crazy Heart": Will Win
George Clooney "Up in the Air"
Colin Firth "A Single Man"
Morgan Freeman "Invictus"
Jeremy Renner "The Hurt Locker"
I am embarrassed to say this, but I have not seen "Crazy Heart" or "A Single Man." I have tried, but failed. From clips and interviews, I hear Colin Firth does amazing in this movie. It is very demanding subject matter and I would really like to see him come out with an Oscar. Jeremy Renner is very easy on the eyes so I would be happy with him too. Actually I don't really care who wins. I'll go with the real critics on this one and give it to Jeff Bridges.
BEST ACTRESSMeryl Streep "Julie and Julia"
Sandra Bullock "The Blindside": Will Win
Carey Mulligan "An Education"
Helen Mirren "The Last Station"
Gabourey Sidibe "Precious"
I am yet again embarrassed that I have not seen "The Last Station" or "An Education." These little movies are such a bitch because they only play them at certain theaters. It's hard for me to get to them. Either way Sandra Bullock will most likely win. Do I love Sandra? YES. Do I think she should win? No. I just don't think this movie is good enough to be here. Sandra did the best of her career, but I don't think its good enough. I hear Carey Mulligan is phemon, but I haven't seen it. But I mean she's dating Shia LaBeouf so I don't feel that bad if she loses. She's already got the man and the career. Two things I definitely don't.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTORMatt Damon "Invictus"
Woody Harrelson "The Messanger"
Christopher Plummer "The Last Station"
Stanley Tucci "The Lovely Bones"
Christoph Waltz "Inglorious Basterds" Will Win/Should Win
I love Matt Damon, but his role didn't do it for me. I have not seen "The Messenger" but I hear its great and pretty intense subject matter so I'd like to see Woody in it. Who doesn't love a little Woody? Stanley Tucci was great in "The Lovely Bones." He's great in everything, so I think he really deserves this nomination along with a punch in the face for giving me nightmares. The winner will be and should be Christoph Waltz for "Inglorious Basterds." Great movie and great performance.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESSVera Farmiga "Up in the Air"
Penelope Cruz "Nine"
Anna Kendrick "Up in the Air"
M'onique "Precious": Will Win/Should Win
Maggie Gyllenhaal "Crazy Heart"
Although I am far from a fan of the loud mouthed, hairy legged M'onique, this is well-deserved. She is quite disturbing and shocking in this performance. Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga were also very good.
Best Animated Feature Film will undoubtedly go to "Up." Best Original Screenplay will be a toss up between "The Hurt Locker" and "Inglorious Basterds." I'm crossing my fingers for "Basterds." Best Adapted Screenplay will most likely go to "Up in the Air," but I'm hoping for "District 9," one of my favorite movies of the year!
The rest of the categories I either don't give a shit about or don't care to discuss right now. I hope you enjoyed what I think...since I am brilliant! Good luck with your pools! If you want to join ours, there's still time! See you on the red carpet!
